1947 GMC

After years of thinking about a project I finally came across a 1947 GMC 1/2 Ton on ebay from seller RodzShop. It was advertised as a “1947 GMC RAT ROD HOT ROD GASSER 1/2TON SHORTBED CLASSIC”. The full ebay ad was as follows

YOU CAN’T DRIVE IT HOME.MUST BE TOWED.

It was local and I drove up to Clinton Corners to take a look. I met John who has been in the businees for quite a while and had an impressive photo gallery in his garage as well as quite a collection of cars and trucks around the property.

From what John said the previous owner had bought it from someone in Missouri a few years back. It was on the road last year ( 2005 ) and even had the inspection and registration stickers in the window. Sounds like the original 216 had issues and they had planned to drop in the 235 that you seen in the bed.

It was for sale locally and John said he had lots of interest, but many of them wanted to part it out and it was clear that he would hate to see that happen. If he didn’t have so many other projects he said he would keep it himself and build it out when the time came. There are some obvious rust spots but overall the metal seems pretty solid. It looks like you might expect any vehicle from 1947 that was put to good use in it’s time and hadn’t really been worked over yet. It also wasn’t a truck left in the field for years to weather away either. It seemed to fit the bill for exactly the kind of project I was looking for. Well one of the projects I had in mind anyway. The MG would have to wait.

We talked about price a bit and since it was for sale locally and John would rather have it goto someone with honest intentions we struck a deal. I met him at 9am on 5/10/2005 and it was loaded onto his flatbed and we traveled the 20 odd some miles to it’s new home.

And so the Journey Begins.
